Greeting! Here in Kitega, it is planting season for the farmers, a time of hard work and sweat to ensure that the fall harvest will be bountiful. At Kitega Community Centre, we are harvesting the fruits of our labor a bit early, as May saw several encouraging developments. Here are the May highlights:

Partnerships:

The local government of Buikwe district provided the centre with a grant to fund a Poultry Project. We’ve used the funds to set up a chicken house and are now looking to fill it up with chicks and chickens. The Project Project will demonstrate important husbandry skills for the local community and children to learn, and the eggs and chicks will be sold to support the centre’s activities.

In May, Kitega staff also received training on Adult Functional Literacy from our partner, African Prisons Project.

Children’s Progress:
Brian, a teacher at the centre, is proud to share the progress of some disabled children:

Rachael Nansubuga–Of all the vocational lessons at the Centre, Rachel used to prefer only basket weaving, but in May she became intensely interested in table cloth making and is quickly catching up to her peers.

Grace Nanyonjo–Grace’s ability to concentrate on a vocational lesson at any given time period increased from 4 minutes to 10 minutes.

Shamim Kyoyiga–Shamim became the only student at the centre to have mastered the telling of time correctly.

The other disabled children at the centre also amazed the staff when they cleaned up the tables and dishes by themselves after lunch one day. The teachers have put a lot of time and effort into teaching just this simple task, and to see the children be able to do it independently was a huge gratification.

The Almighty God who has made it possible for us to see the light of a new month is worth all the praise and grandeur. I convey warm greetings and earnest love from the children of Kitega community centre, Katungulu village, members of the village community bank, teachers and the entire management staff at Kitega.

April 2013 was characterized by the building of strong foundations, both literally and figuratively. Here are some highlights:

Children: The disabled and disadvantaged children also took steps to build a strong foundation for their future, namely by learning new academic and vocational skills. The disabled children notably took up tailoring lessons while the disadvantaged children learned computer skills.

Staff: Kitega Board and Management finished the 2013-2017 Strategic Plan, which will provide a road map for the next five years. We believe that the road ahead is well paved because we’ve identified the strategies and goals that will help us to reach our vision. We encourage you to read the Plan and to reflect on how you fit into Kitega’s mission and vision. Strategic Plan 2013-2017

VICOBA: The adults continued to build a stronger financial foundation for themselves and their families. Women and men from Kayunga completed their VICOBA training while the more established groups took on initiatives such as soap making and goat rearing.
A Chance to double your donation -Shalom House
We continued to make progress towards finishing the construction of the Shalom Guesthouse, which will house international volunteers and visitors once it’s completed. The Shalom house will also provide a stream of revenues to fund Kitega programs and services, thus serving as one of the financial foundation on which the Centre rests. We’ve launched a fundraising drive on our website to help us finish the house. Please check it out and support us in anyway you can!

Greetings from the Kitega Centre, we are ready to Make it Happen in 2013.

The Centre Board and management have been busy developing a 5 year strategic plan which will guide the activities of the Centre for the next five years 2013-17.
Meanwhile the disabled children are already back for Centre activity, doing so many things that will be shared in the upcoming Newsletters.

A team from Kitega Community Centre traveled to Mbale under the Tearfund – Inspired Individuals supported collaboration to learn about good farming practices.

Here is a post from the Kitega Community Centre (David Clemy’s project in Uganda):

Disability not Inability

For a long time, the centre has focused on children with learning difficulties, many were rejected by their parents and guardians. The parents believed that the children’s disabilities were linked to curses and evil spirits, and thus many parents overlooked the children’s needs, well-being, and basic human rights.

Kitega Community Centre has intervened to show that with proper educational and social-emotional support, children with disabilities can learn the skills to be self-sustaining and to make positive contributions to their families and communities.

The centre has achieved positive results by changing the attitude of the community towards such children. Now people look at them with a different perspective.

However, there is much that needs to be done to solve the underlying causes of the neglect of children with disabilities, including widespread family unemployment and poverty, illiteracy, and lack of access to quality health services.

Kitega therefore carries out many programs that are aimed at improving the living standards and the socio-economic conditions in the community, thereby helping the children and their families to escape from chronic poverty.
