Celia grew up in Uganda in a family of lawyers – her father was a judge – and yet she carries the pain of seeing her father showing justice to others and yet often denying justice to his own children. Like so many in her family she too qualified in law with a Masters in Children’s Law, which later led to the establishment of Justice for Children to provide legal aid to the most vulnerable in Ugandan society.

Children in Uganda face very real justice issues, including human sacrifice, sexual abuse, trafficking and detention of street children. The scale of the problem completely overwhelms any attempt by the state to provide legal services to children, and the private sector does not see any financial incentive to represent them.

Justice for Children works with various remand facilities to provide counselling and legal representation to children. They also provide training to schools, police, prison staff and churches on children’s rights. In addition, they also equip institutions to recognise child abuse and advocate for a reform of Uganda's criminal justice system.
