Patricia Sawo is the leader of a church in Kitale, Kenya, and is herself living with HIV. She specialises in gender and women’s issues and public awareness of HIV and AIDS, and she has more than 12 years’ experience in counselling and care as a pastor. She has a deep understanding of communities in East and Southern Africa. Patricia is a member of ANERELA+ (African Network of Religious Leaders living with or personally affected by HIV and AIDS). She made a dramatic U-turn in her attitude towards people with HIV after becoming aware of her own status. An inspirational woman with a powerful testimony, Patricia challenges the church to overcome a culture of stigma and discrimination. She talks passionately about the acute reality of the AIDS pandemic engulfing the church in sub-Saharan Africa – where many church leaders in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi hold more funerals each week than regular services. She also explores how the church is fighting back as networks of volunteers tackle the issues and meet critical needs.
